POSSESSED headline a Historic Night of Extreme Metal at Boogaloo
On a night dedicated to the origins and evolution of extreme music, Boogaloo in Zagreb hosted an exceptional gathering of death metal history and contemporary underground force. Organized by Abyssal Booking and Nasty Events in cooperation with the club, the evening brought together legendary pioneers, long-standing regional veterans, and a new wave of Croatian underground bands in a celebration of pure, uncompromising heaviness.
The atmosphere inside Boogaloo was charged from the very beginning, as fans gathered with clear anticipation for a lineup that promised both historical significance and relentless sonic intensity. What followed was a night that lived up to every expectation and more.
Opening the event were Häxänking, delivering a raw and aggressive blend of black and thrash metal rooted in occult themes and old-school energy. The Varaždin-based band immediately set a dark and chaotic tone for the evening, combining fierce riffs with an unpolished intensity that resonated strongly with the early crowd. Despite being one of the newer names on the scene, they performed with confidence and conviction, proving why they are quickly becoming one of the most talked-about acts in the regional underground.
The momentum continued with Corpse Grinder, one of the longest-running death metal acts in the region. Their old-school approach—rooted in raw aggression, fast tempos, and uncompromising heaviness—served as a direct link to the early days of the genre. Performing with experience and authority built over decades, the band demonstrated why they remain a cornerstone of the regional extreme metal scene. Their set was a reminder of death metal’s underground origins and its enduring power when delivered without compromise.
Next to take the stage were Serpentslain, representing a more technical and melodic branch of death metal. Their set showcased a refined balance between brutality and atmosphere, with tight musicianship, dynamic songwriting, and a clear sense of identity. Drawing from their established catalogue, including material from Age of Verdict and the Cognitive Dissonance EP, they delivered a performance marked by precision and emotional depth. Their blend of speed, melody, and technical skill stood out as one of the evening’s highlights, earning strong approval from the audience.
As anticipation reached its peak, the stage was set for the arrival of Possessed, the legendary pioneers whose influence on extreme music is immeasurable. Formed in the early 1980s in San Francisco, Possessed are widely regarded as one of the founding forces of death metal, with their groundbreaking debut Seven Churches shaping the entire genre. Their appearance in Zagreb carried special weight, as the band continues to celebrate the legacy of that iconic release while demonstrating that their energy and relevance remain undiminished.

Jeff Becerra’s pleasure and happiness were evident during the performance of each song and became very infectious! The entire setlist thrilled us and didn’t give us a moment of rest or respite! The concert was concluded with a brilliant March to Die and Swing of the Axe and left us in complete awe!

From the earliest sets to the final moments of Possessed’s performance, the crowd maintained a constant level of energy, enthusiasm, and respect for the bands on stage. Circle pits, loud chanting, and continuous engagement reflected a deeply connected audience that understood the historical weight of what they were witnessing. Each band received strong reactions, with applause and cheers growing progressively louder as the night advanced.
