Boogaloo became a battleground for extreme metal on October 15, as four death metal acts delivered an evening of unrelenting brutality, technical precision and crushing sonic intensity. ETERNAL opened the proceedings with a raw, aggressive approach, setting the tone for the carnage to follow. UNDEATH brought a different flavour to the bill, embracing the grimy riffs, horror-inspired atmosphere and infectious old-school sensibilities of American death metal.

British death metal heavyweights INGESTED provided one of the evening’s most punishing highlights, unleashing a devastating blend of slam, brutal death metal and deathcore. Their performance balanced bone-crushing breakdowns and savage vocal delivery with tightly executed rhythmic shifts, proving that sheer heaviness is most effective when supported by musicianship and control. Rather than relying exclusively on sonic aggression, the band maintained a compelling intensity throughout, translating the ferocity of their recorded material into an imposing live experience.

SUFFOCATION, however, were the undisputed centerpiece of the evening, delivering a masterclass in controlled chaos that reaffirmed their status as genuine architects of extreme metal. Their trademark combination of intricate guitar work, punishing rhythmic changes, monstrous vocals and relentless blast beats sounded devastating without sacrificing the clarity needed to appreciate the technical intricacies beneath the brutality. The anniversary celebration surrounding Effigy of the Forgotten, the landmark 1991 album that helped redefine the boundaries of death metal, added historical significance to a set that connected the band’s pioneering past with their continued relevance. The precision of the instrumental interplay was particularly impressive, with the guitars twisting through complex patterns while the rhythm section supplied an almost suffocating foundation of percussive force. Yet the performance never became a mere technical exhibition, as Suffocation channeled their formidable musicianship into a visceral assault that kept the intensity high from start to finish.

The concert demonstrated the strength of a genre that continues to thrive through both its pioneering veterans and its ambitious younger generation. Eternal, Undeath and Ingested each contributed a distinct shade of extremity, but Suffocation’s commanding performance provided the evening with its defining statement. Zagreb received a thoroughly satisfying dose of death metal at its most uncompromising, with Suffocation once again proving why they remain one of the genre’s most influential institutions.
