Obscura
Obscura is a German death metal band founded in 2002 in the Bavarian town of Landshut, and is known for its technically extremely complex and progressive music. The spiritus movens of the whole story is guitarist and vocalist Steffen Kummerer, who has remained the only permanent member throughout the years of numerous lineups. The band’s name was inspired by the album of the same name by the band Gorguts. Obscura debuted in 2006 with the album Retribution, but gained global attention in 2009 with their second album Cosmogenesis, released on Relapse Records. Their music combines technical death metal with elements of jazz, classical and progressive rock, with philosophical and science fiction lyrics. This was followed by the acclaimed albums Omnivium (2011), Akróasis (2016) and Diluvium (2018), which together form a conceptual tetralogy about the creation and destruction of the universe. Five years ago, they released the album A Valediction, which features a new lineup and an even more mature, melodic approach. Over the years, Obscura has collaborated with top musicians, including Christian Münzner, Linus Klausenitzer and Hannes Grossmann. Their concerts are known for their technical precision and powerful atmosphere, and the band has established itself as one of the leaders in the technical death metal genre. Obscura remains an active and innovative force on the global metal scene. The band members are Steffen Kummerer (vocals, guitar), Kevin Olasz (guitar), Robin Zielhorst (bass) and James Stewart (drums).
