Mudhoney is one of those bands whose biography should be known in order to better understand the context of an era. The founders of the band, Mark Arm and Steve Turner, in the suburbs of Seattle, begin their musical journey in 1978 with “the worst band ever”, as they were introduced on local radio, and the name Mr. Epp and the Calculations is named after a high school math teacher. Truth be told, the very beginnings were more of a joke than a real band, so they had their first real performance only three years later – the guys didn’t really know how to play. And here we come to one of those general, pop culture places when it comes to Mudhoney – Mark Arm who, describing his band at the time, was the first to use the word grunge: “I hate Mr. Epp and the Calculations! Pure grunge! Pure noise! Pure shit!”. He and Turner soon entered a somewhat more serious phase, and in 1984 they founded the iconic Green River, a band whose first EP “Come on Down” is considered the first grunge release in general. Interestingly, bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard, who founded Pearl Jam a few years later, were with them in that band. Although Arm and Turner parted ways at this stage due to disagreements about how Green River should sound, they reunited at the end of 1987 and Mudhoney was finally formed, named after the film of the same name by the peculiar American director Russ Meyer. Matt Lukin, who just left the iconic Melvins, joins them on bass. For the legendary label Sub Pop, they will soon release their debut EP “Superfuzz Bigmuff”, which was a great inspiration to Kurt Cobain, and there is also their first single “Touch Me I’m Sick”, with which they achieved considerable visibility and popularity in the USA. Sonic Youth soon invited them to tour the UK, while in 1989 they released their first album “Mudhoney”. Since then, they have strung together 10 more official releases and cemented their cult status on a global level. Along with the aforementioned Arma and Turner, one of the founders, drummer Dan Peters, is still in the band, while Australian Guy Maddison has been playing bass since 2001.

SØWT is a noise-pop band founded in Eindhoven. This foursome of outsiders combine personal and emotional lyrics with guitars turned up to the max. Their music floats on a dreamy yet powerful beat, creating a beautiful yet bittersweet soundscape that helps people get through the day. They say that their role models are Smashing Pumpkin, Nirvana and Sonic Youth, and they work with Bob de Wit, the producer of bands such as Mudhoney and Radar Men From The Moon. It’s worth giving them a chance.
